My transformation

Hello anyone and everyone,
I have done it and started a new my transformation!!!! Hopefully, fingers crossed. I have not only started to eat healthier but started exercising again
It has been a full week and although tiring it has been good. When I was young I use to play soccer but then got injured pretty bad. Since then I have had constant problems with my once injured knee feeling weak or wanting to give out on me. But this time around I have been following different exercise routines that have less of a harsh impact on my knees to strengthen it. I hope this does happen and help me lose weight in the process. As a teacher, the little time I have left after I'm done grading papers and prepping my class is well.... too little. I would normally try to recover during this time, but this when I am fitting my exercise for my health should be high priority. Well I will stop here for now, but will return with updates. If you have any suggestions on fun exercising activities feel free to let me know. Thank you for reading and have a amazing rest of your day.

Teacher in the making

Hello everyone and  anyone who decides to read this :) I wrote on here several years ago and have not visited the blog since. I am now realizing I started a blog and returning to post again. The last time I posted I had just gone back to school to finish degree in Liberal Arts to pursue teaching. I am glad to report that I have done so successfully. I graduated and within a year had the opportunity to teach in central California. As I write this I am almost done with my first year as a teacher and it has been a blast. I didn't realize how much work goes into this profession and how mentally draining and demanding it has become. Nevertheless, I love it. I couldn't see myself doing anything else. Now that I have one year under my belt, the little gears in my brain are turning as I look forward to the positive changes I will make for the next school year. I any case, I hope to continue to grow and learn how to become a better teacher from the everyday experiences in class and professional development training.

Scattered Thinking Process

My thought process has been altered. I used to start thinking about ideas and wander off into a different subject or idea all together. After being part of our educational system I have been force to think fast and simple. “Get to the point” is what my teachers would say. Although I still try to tell a story when I am writing about any subject I limit the stories to get back on task just like I did with what my teachers would say. I am a Hispanic and definitely have the indirect thinking pattern. Read my writing, I’ll take you down a winding road.

Brain Usage

Left Brain "Critical"                                 Right Brain "Creative"
1+1=2 style logic
drawings or stories
careful, step-by-step work
trusting what you feel
numbers, facts and statistics
Visual or spatial thinking
improvising
connecting ideas- Synthesis
visual images, picturing your thoughts
emotions, feelings, visions, dreams

I tend to see myself using both sides of my brain when I do things like play soccer, cook, teach kids about brushing their teeth, and have meetings with my co-workers amongst other things. When I play soccer I tend to do the basic moves I was taught as a child and then add flair and become creative about how to beat my opponents. With cooking I tend to start with a recipe and because of housemates being lactose intolerance, I improvise to make it work. I also try new seasonings to give the food a new twist. When teaching the kids I tend to be creative, thinking in a flash, and improvising when presenting depending on age group. With co-workers I tend to connect ideas, try to visualize the whole process instead of focusing on just the area we are doing right now, and bring up stories about experience. I also bring structure, simple logic, and use careful step-by-step process into meetings with my co-workers. Sometimes I feel that although I don’t use as many “critical” things from my left side of the brain, I am much better at them. On the other hand, I use more of the right side, “the creative” side but those things are yet to become my best assets or skills.

Obstacles for Writing

So after doing the exercise about using pen, paper and crayons to determine what are the issues that stop me from starting and progressing and a piece of writing, I have brought to light what I have known all along. The first thing I started to draw on my paper was a paper and pen that had a sparkle next to it. I drew this because I feel like many ties my paper is not up to par or perfect compared to my peers. After really thinking about it, I believe the problem is deep down inside my issues with my father and his comparative way of judging me based on what others have done. I now seem to keep myself down by doing the same thing, comparing myself. Another thing I drew was a dictionary because I felt that my vocabulary can only get me so far. My schooling all the way through high school was horrible when it came to writing. I had good teachers in all other subjects but in my writing classes, since I did not test very high, the teachers were not quite as interesting in helping us doing better as much as just entertain us until the end of school. Lastly I drew a clock because I feel that I need to learn how to manage my time better in writing. I tend to spend too much time on the beginning and then rush the end of most papers. Although they seem to come out alright, I hate having to finish my papers last minute. This in turn makes me feel like the paper is not perfect and comes right back to the first drawing. I’m not a horrible writer, but I need to truly believe that before I can move on to becoming a better one.

Kids have Germs

So I recently learned my lesson about procrastinating. I work with students throughout Humboldt County teaching dental education and working on applying fluoride varnish on students' teeth. As an educator and dental worker working on teeth full of saliva and germs, I told myself it was only logical for me to get the flu shot to avoid getting sick. I said I would my flu shot around last November and never did and ended up getting a little sick close to Christmas time making the holidays a little blue and sad. While I was sick that time I promised myself that as soon as I felt better I would go get the flu shot. I completely procrastinated and last week I got the flu again. This time around I felt worst than I had ever. At one point I had a fever of 102.7 and was barfing all over the place. I felt like I was slowly dying as I learned my lesson about procrastinating. I am now better but already have an appointment to get my flu shot on Monday morning. NO MORE PROCRASTINATING!!!!
